When we heard the knock on the door, about half-an-hour later, we all threw each other a glance. Aaron tried to play it down though.

“Don’t assume anything,” he said. “We don’t know anything for truth, and we don’t want to lead poor Megan astray about her sister.”

Cassy and I stayed seated as Aaron got up. It was the perfect opportunity to consider the question which had been reeling through my mind for the past half-an-hour once again.

What could Megan have done that would be bad enough to upset somebody to this extent? To have what seemed to be a vendetta against her? To make them want to kill others?

Or was the person manipulating Katy just so awful that they would want to commit murder regardless?

I was interrupted a moment later, when Aaron reappeared through the living room door, Megan walking behind him. Her blonde hair was tied back into a bun behind her head, and her eyes looked hazy once again. She wore denim dungarees, and a white t-shirt.

“Hi, guys,” she said. As she smiled, her eyes seemed to stare through us.

We said hello back. Meanwhile, Aaron tried to play the role of conscientious host for a second time that morning. Offering Megan a seat, asking her if she wanted coffee, to which she said yes please. Telling her to help herself to pastries.

After he had gone into the kitchen, Cassy and I were left with Megan. Now sat on her own purple chair, she smiled, but it was obviously forced.

“So, has something important happened? Aaron didn’t really say much over the phone. Do we have any more information?”

Cassy looked at me. I tried to guard my answer.

“A few things,” I said. “We’ll say as soon as Aaron’s back. Don’t want him missing out.”

“Okay,” she said. “Hopefully it’s something that can help us to stop her.”

“Hopefully,” I said. Though it was possible that it was no longer Katy that we needed to stop.

Aaron reappeared a few seconds later with a mug of instant coffee in his hand, as the fresh coffee had since been drained by the three of us. It was probably to blame for the sweat pressing against my forehead, along with the heat already building outside. Another hot June day.

“So, Megan,” said Aaron. He was smiling. “Where to start? With yourself, I suppose. Any more dreams over the past couple of days? Any more information you can give us?”

She shook her head. “Nothing,” she said. “I felt a little odd yesterday evening. I felt like something might have been happening to my sister. But apart from that, nothing significant.”

I cleared my throat. “It makes sense that you would have felt that way yesterday evening, Megan. You see, yesterday evening, I managed to contact your sister.”

Her vacant eyes fought for my words. “You contacted her? What do you mean?”

I gave sideways glances to Cassy and Aaron. “Well, I shouldn’t really have done this, but I decided to see if I could contact the spirit myself.”

“What? And it worked?”

“Yes,” I said.
